According to a teardown by Andy Harding from Salem Techsperts, Apple’s new MacBook Neo may feature the most accessible MacBook battery design since 2012.
For years, many MacBook batteries were heavily glued to the chassis, making battery replacement more difficult, time-consuming, and potentially risky. In contrast, the MacBook Neo uses a screw-mounted battery design, making battery service significantly easier.
A Big Change: Battery Secured with Screws Instead of Glue
One of the most important improvements highlighted in the teardown is that the battery is secured with screws rather than adhesive.
This is a major step forward for battery accessibility. In many previous MacBook models, battery removal often involved careful prying, adhesive removal, and extra repair risk. With the MacBook Neo, the battery can be removed in a much more straightforward and service-friendly way.
This design change helps make battery replacement:
- Easier
- Safer
- Faster
- More practical for long-term maintenance
Battery Is Immediately Accessible After Opening the Back Cover
Another reason the MacBook Neo stands out is its flat internal layout. Once the bottom case is removed, the battery is immediately visible and accessible, along with several other serviceable parts.
This flatter disassembly structure reduces the number of repair steps required and makes routine battery servicing much more manageable compared to many recent laptop designs.
Why This Matters for Laptop Longevity
Battery design plays a major role in how long a laptop remains practical to use. When a battery is easier to replace, it becomes more realistic for users to extend the life of the device instead of replacing the entire laptop.
The MacBook Neo’s more accessible battery layout is a positive move for users who care about repairability, serviceability, and long-term device value.
Repair Score and Remaining Limitations
According to the teardown review, the MacBook Neo received a TGTTEL repair score of 8/10.
While the battery design is a major improvement, some limitations still remain:
- Storage is still soldered
- RAM is still soldered
- The display panel is still fused to the lid assembly
Even so, from a battery replacement perspective, this is one of the most encouraging MacBook design changes in years.
A Positive Step for Repair-Friendly Battery Design
For users, repair shops, and anyone who values replaceable laptop batteries, the MacBook Neo represents a meaningful improvement. A screw-secured battery is a much more practical design for future servicing and maintenance.
At DrBattery, we believe easier battery replacement helps extend laptop lifespan, reduce waste, and make device ownership more practical over time.
